Recessed lighting and ceiling fans are the two upgrades that change a Phoenix room the most for the least money. Both are also the two most commonly installed badly. Here's how to plan them properly.
Planning a recessed lighting layout
- Spacing: divide your ceiling height by two — a 9-foot ceiling wants cans roughly 4.5 feet apart
- Keep cans 24–30 inches off the walls so you light the room, not the baseboards
- 4-inch cans for hallways and accents, 6-inch for main living areas
- Color temperature: 2700K for living rooms and bedrooms, 3000K for kitchens and baths
- Always put them on a dimmer rated for LED — it's the difference between a lounge and an operating room
In the Valley, budget roughly $120 to $250 per light installed in a finished ceiling. Wafer-style LEDs cost less to install in tight joist bays; traditional cans give better beam control in high ceilings.

Size it to the room
- Up to 12 ft room: 42-inch fan
- 12–15 ft room: 52-inch fan
- Great rooms over 18 ft: 60-inch or two fans
- Patios and porches: wet- or damp-rated fans only — Phoenix dust and monsoon rain destroy indoor units
The box matters more than the fan
Ninety percent of wobble complaints come from a fan hung on a standard lighting box that was never rated to carry a moving load. A fan-rated box with proper bracing is non-negotiable, and it's the first thing we check on a replacement.
Running the fan the right direction
Counter-clockwise in summer to push air down and make the room feel several degrees cooler — which lets you raise the thermostat and cut cooling costs during Phoenix summers. Clockwise on low in winter to circulate warm air without a draft.
